Customers often ask us “so what is the Gripdeck™ surface, it looks like standard metal?”
Take a look at the video above to find out more about it…
We can’t give you the secret Gripdeck™ recipe, but we can tell you a bit about it! Gripdeck™ makes a great external ramp surface, as it doesn’t merely look anti-slip, it really is. The unique and extremely durable Gripdeck™ technology uses millions of surface modifications to create a multi-directional, weather resistant grip surface that retains its high-grip even when wet – so it’s perfect for the unpredictable British weather!
Who is Gripdeck™ for?
Gripdeck™ ramp surface is for everyone. Primarily designed to keep ramp users safe, the incredible grip surface works for all mobility devices and types. Gripdeck™ is also high-heel and pet-friendly, with anti-slip protection that keeps everyone safe.
The solid, continuous surface design ensures that grass and weeds can’t grow through, and therefore prevents slips and falls. This also means Gripdeck™ products require low maintenance, and remain neat and tidy.
What is the alternative to Gripdeck™?
Standard shiny chequer-plate is the metal surface sometimes found on external ramps or half-steps. In contrast to our Gripdeck™ surface, chequer-plate can get very slippery and dangerous to use when wet.
For alternatives to Gripdeck™, ensure you look out for these minimum requirements:
- Tested to BS7976
- Meets or exceeds requirements of BS8300
- Meets or exceeds requirements of Approved Doc M
Where is Gripdeck™ used?
Gripdeck™ surface is a highly effective access ramp surface that has been proven in use in both residential and public applications throughout the UK and beyond for many years.
Who designed Gripdeck™?
Gripdeck™ was pioneered and developed by Enable Access working closely with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 2001/2 and then subsequently application tested for use and prolonged exposure at the BRE Research Site on top of a hill in East Kilbride.
How was Gripdeck™ tested?
Grip performance of walking surfaces is generally categorised as either ‘Dangerous’, ‘Marginal’ or ‘Safe’. The test results confirm Gripdeck™ surface as ‘Safe’ by a large margin.
The results were collected in April 2018 by Dr Malcolm Bailey of Radlett Consultancy using the PTV (Pendulum Test Value) method. (Dr Bailey has been Chairman of TC 339, the European Standard Committee for harmonisation of slip testing and also Chairman of the BSI Committee, which was responsible for BS 7976, the Pendulum Standard.)
Gripdeck™ remarkable test results!
When testing Gripdeck™ there were some incredible results:
- Gripdeck™ anti-slip performance actually increases when wet!
- Gripdeck™ performs over 2 times better in the wet than 5 bar or chequer plate products
- In every condition Gripdeck™ results out-performed other 5 bar or chequer plate products
Maintaining in cold weather
In cold weather ice or frost can form on most surfaces, and ice can then make the ramp surface slippery. It is recommended that rock salt or similar is used on the surface of the ramp to melt the ice, and unlike steel surfaces the Gripdeck™ surface is suitable for use with rock salt type products.
What Enable Access products use Gripdeck™?
Gripdeck™ is the surface we use on our relocatable and modular external products, and you can count on it on our Permaramp Semi-Permanent Ramps, our Welcome Modular Ramps, and our Welcome Giant Half Steps.
